Two members of the SAPS have appeared in the Acornhoek Magistrate’s Court on charges of corruption.
Sergeant Kgothatso Alex Maile, 36 and Constable Jabulani Hanley Sebulelo aged 38 are both stationed at Bushbuckridge SAPS.
The two suspects are alleged to have colluded in a corrupt manner where they are said to have demanded as well as received cash on Friday, 26 June 2020, from two separate liquor outlets in Bushbuckridge, after they falsely stated to the owners that they were operating on a day which was prohibited due to the Lockdown Regulations.
The police were notified about the two incidents and an investigation was conducted where members of the Anti-Corruption Unit followed up on the allegations. The two; Maile and Sebulelo were granted bail of R1000 each and are expected to appear at the same court again on 25 August 2020.
The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Mondli Zuma has condemned the alleged involvement of members in corrupt activities.
Lieutenant General Zuma has also commended the police officials who bravely arrested their own members.
General Zuma further said that no one is above the law,
“Any member who commits crime must feel the full wrath of the law despite your social status,” said General Zuma.
An internal investigation process against the members is underway.
