The name Destro Makhiya rings a bell to most hip hop lovers from Bushbuckridge, especially in Marite where he was born. The versatile rapper, whose real name is Devine Sizwe Godi has climaxed to the top in a short period, and he was recently crowned the best hip hop artist for 2018 in the province at the BFM music awards, with his hit song “Ngyekeni” in third position for the Song of the Year.
It all started in 2011 when Destro realised his talent behind the microphone. He says his passion was initially influenced by his friends. “The people I grew up with used to listen to a lot of hip hop music, and after writing my first song; I never looked back because I realised that I have the potential to do great”, he said.
Although his music career started under the ‘Young Hazy’ crew, Destro’s career only started to flourish when he went solo and moved to Daveyton to further his studies in 2015. In 2016, his talent was recognised by the Daveyton Hip Hop Music Awards where he won the Best Newcomer trophy.
“When I realised that I had gained recognition in Gauteng, I also noticed that I had no impact back at home, and when I completed my studies in 2017 I decided to come back home and build a name here”, he said. In the same year, he was recognised and won big at the Geleza Mreppa Music Competition in 2017, and also scooped the Best Hip Hop Artist of the year at the Golden Stars Awards.
Destro says one of the reasons he’s been consistent is because he’s always working on improving his work without paying too much attention on what others are doing. He also emphasised the importance of unity in the music industry.
“I feel like as musicians we haven’t done enough to be united, which is one of the reasons many people still undermine our work because people would find it much easier to show us love if we’re united, but then slowly but surely, we are getting there. I would like to thank everyone who believes in what I do, and I will continue working hard to make each one of you proud, keep believing in me.” He said.
He added that he would like to invite everyone to his third annual ‘Home Coming with Destro Makhiya’ event which he hosts annually in Marite on the 24th of December in Carlton, Marite.
