The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has recently pleaded with families of deceased beneficiaries to report their death accordingly in order to enable SASSA to cancel their grants and to avoid the risk of being arrested for withdrawing social grants payment fraudulently.
“When a death is registered at Home Affairs, as the systems interface SASSA will automatically be notified and will cancel the social grant immediately as the Home Affairs Population Register is linked with the SASSA SOCPEN database,” said SASSA in statement.
SASSA also warned families of the beneficiaries who died before the beginning of the next month not to withdraw the grant paid into the account of the deceased beneficiary at the beginning of the month.
“By withdrawing the money, families are committing a serious fraud and criminal offence. Social Assistance Act demands that SASSA must recover the social grant payment withdrawn on behalf of the deceased. The law will demand that the money be paid back to SASSA or the families will face the processes of law enforcement agencies,” said SASS
