An apparent road rage incident has claimed the lives of 52-year-old Andre Duvenhage and his son Danie. The incident happened at a filling station along the N1 north at Bandelierkop. According to Police Spokesperson, Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo, a 33-year-old man has been arrested and charged with two counts of murder.
According to police reports the dispute between the men; father and son, and a 33-year-old taxi driver started while all three were travelling along the N1 from Louis Trichardt, direction Polokwane.
“At Bandelierkop the taxi driver turned off the highway into a filling station and was reportedly followed by the two males,” said Mojapelo.
It is alleged that while Andre and his son were at the filling station a fight broke out and the taxi driver produced a gun and shot them. Mojapleo explained that the son died instantly, while his father was critically injured and died upon arrival at Makhado memorial hospital.
Mojapelo said the taxi driver was arrested and is currently in hospital under police guard after he accidentally shot himself during the alleged fight at the filling station. Investigations revealed that the accused used an unlicensed firearm during the incident. He also said that the firearm has been confiscated for ballistic examination.
Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe condemned this incident and has ordered a full investigation into the firearm that was used, its owner and circumstances that led to the shooting.
