The Giyani Specialised Commercial Crimes Court has sentenced a former Limpopo prosecutor to four years’ imprisonment for corruption. Herbert Serumula, a former prosecutor in the Morebeng Magistrate’s Court solicited a R2 000 bribe and demanded to be bought a vehicle in order to destroy a docket.
Khathutshelo Matshivha paid R1500 and the case was withdrawn.
National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi said “Serumula demanded money from Matshivha in order to destroy his docket. Matshivha had been arrested for possession of suspected stolen property. Serumula kept on demanding more money and further requested Matshivha to buy him a vehicle.”
Meanwhile, in April, Acting Mpumalanga Prosecutions Head, Advocate Matric Luphondo, and his two co-accused were granted bail of R20 000 each.
This after Luphondo, the Hawk’s Ayanda Plaatjie and Mpumalanga’s Human Settlements Head Kebone Masange were arrested on charges of corruption for trying to bribe a prosecutor to sway a case in their favour.
The case has been postponed to July.
