A 36-year-old police Sergeant has been arrested for the murder of a 44 year-old, whom he allegedly shot at point blank range. It is alleged that the victim was sitting in his vehicle outside a liquor outlet in Polokwane.
Limpopo Police spokesperson, Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo says the man was apparently sitting in a vehicle and waiting for his girlfriend who was still inside the store.
“The victim was allegedly inside the vehicle at about 23h49, reportedly waiting for his girlfriend who was still in the store when the assailant approached the vehicle and shot him at point blank range. The suspect then fled the scene.
“Police and medical emergency personnel were summoned and they swiftly responded. A case of murder was opened and Police commenced with investigations and manhunt for the assailant. The victim was certified dead on the scene,” says Mojapelo.
The Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, has strongly condemned the killing.
“We want to reassure community members that the majority of police members are disciplined and conduct themselves in accordance with the Code of Conduct and set standards. This isolated deviant and criminal conduct allegedly manifested by this member will therefore not be tolerated.
“In addition to the criminal investigations that are unfolding, the police Management will also take decisive and prompt internal steps against the member”, concluded Lieutenant General Hadebe.”
The suspect handed himself over to the police on Monday and appeared at the Polokwane Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday. The motive for the killing is not yet known.
