A 31-year-old man was recently arrested in connection to the leaked 2020 Maths Matric Exam Paper 2. According to the Minister of Basic Education, Ms. Angie Motshekga a Hawk’s Serious Corruption Investigation led to the arrest of Themba Daniel Shikwambana.
Hawks spokesperson, Colonel Katlego Mogale said the accused works for a Johannesburg-based printing company which is contracted by the Department of Basic Education to print matric exam papers. According to Mogale, Shikwambane has already appeared before the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court. He added that an investigation into the matter is still continuing.
The Department of Basic Education’s spokesperson, Mr. Elijah Mhlanga also confirmed the arrest. This is seen as a development in the case because earlier, the Council of Education Ministers (CEM) said the investigation into the case has not been accomplished and that more work still needs to be done.
After getting a report on the leaks, the council agreed that the credibility, integrity, and fairness of the examination cannot be compromised and that additional deliberations need to be done.
Mhlanga also said that the report can be processed internally and that Minister Angie Motshekga would host a media briefing later during the week in order to make an announcement. He added that the CEM recently held an emergency meeting to look at the implications of these newest developments within the probe into the leaking of the three matric question papers: Mathematics Paper 2, Physical Science Paper 2, and Life Sciences.
