Mpumalanga cop arrested after allegedly allowing hijacked vehicle to be registered

A Mpumalanga police officer was recently arrested for fraud after allegedly allowing the registration of a hijacked vehicle being held as evidence.
The police officer, who works at the Vehicle Crime Investigation Unit, was arrested in White River.
According to Mpumalanga Police Spokesperson, Brigadier Leonard Hlathi, the suspect got himself involved in some alleged corrupt activities by making an authorisation to clear a stolen Toyota RAV4, even though he knew that the said vehicle was subject to a police investigation as it was reportedly stolen during a hijacking incident in March 2020 in Vosloorus, Gauteng.
“The 55-year-old warrant officer allegedly “made it possible for the vehicle to be registered fraudulently”, Hlathi said.
“A team of police investigators are also widening the scope in their probe to determine whether the suspect was not involved in other similar fraudulent activities before,” he added.
The police officer is expected to appear in the White River Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.
