Mpumalanga farmer arrested for killing two job-seekers.

A Mpumalanga farmer and his son have been arrested for allegedly killing two job seekers and injuring another after a scuffle broke out on a farm in Dirkieskop. According to Mpumalanga Police Spokesperson, Colonel Donald Mdhluli, a group of men went to the farm to seek seasonal work, upon arrival at the farm, the owner told them that they were not welcome on his premises.
Mdhluli said the men left the farm but along the way they realised one of them has been left behind, they went back and found the suspects keeping the guy on the farm against his will. Mdhluli said the men ordered the farmer to let the man go, a scuffle then broke out and two men were shot dead while three others sustained serious injuries.
Mdhluli said when the police arrived at the scene, the found the two dead bodies, the other victims and the suspects. He said a case was then opened and the four suspects, aged between 25 and 53, were arrested on two charges of murder and an additional charge of assault with intent to inflict grievous bodily harm.
Mdhluli added that two firearms have been confiscated and they will form part of the investigation.
“The police management in the province has strongly condemned the incident and has since called for calm. They made a plea to members of the public to refrain from using violence in resolving issues. A team of experts has already been established to investigate the case. Police has also asked members of the community to allow space for the law to take its course,” said Mdhluli.
The suspects appeared in the Piet Retief Magistrate’s Court on Monday, the 12th of April.
