The Department of Small Business Development (DSBD) and its agency, the Small Enterprise Development Agency (Seda) in collaboration with Nkangala Local Municipality and Mpumalanga Department of Economic Devolvement and Tourism held a Mall Activation in eMalahleni, Mpumalanga, from the 26th to the 28th of March 2021 under the theme “Show Your Love for Local Brands”.
In an effort to create access to markets and improve SMMEs growth through the development of competitive local products, DSBD and Seda, together with their strategic partners, joined hands and initiated the mall activation concept in the province.
The Mpumalanga Mall Activation was centred on the facilitation of market access for small businesses as a key factor in the development and promotion of small businesses. As such, the objective was to unlock opportunities available within trade blocks and communities in order to create networks and expand access to markets for small businesses.
A total of 29 Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) from different sectors ranging from manufacturing, beauty, food, construction, and service within the Nkangala District Municipality exhibited their products and services, raising awareness for their brands and generating new leads for their business.
As part of the continued support to local businesses, marketing collateral such as personalised branded wall-banners, kidney tables, business cards, and flyers were provided to SMMEs who took part in the initiative. This gesture will go a long way as these SMMEs will be able to use this marketing collateral post the mall activations to continue promoting their business. In addition, DSBD and Seda will continue to develop, support, and promote these SMMEs, to further improve their businesses and profit margins.
In attendance was Seda Board Chairperson Dr Joy Ndlovu and Deputy Chairperson, Ms Nomsa Kana together with Seda Acting Chief Executive Officer, Ms Ntokozo Majola. The event was also graced by the presence of Nkangala District Municipality Executive Mayor, Cllr TS Masilela together with the MMC for Local Economic Development, Cllr T Pookgoadi.
The Nkangala District Municipality Executive Mayor, Cllr TS Masilela, accompanied by the Steve Tshwete Local Municipality Executive Mayor, Cllr D Motsepe attended the closing of the event, where they both participated in the handover of the branded-wall banners to all SMMEs who took part in the Mall Activation event.
During the closing of the event, Seda Mpumalanga Provincial Manager, Mr Mashiba Kgole, expressed his gratitude to all participating SMMEs and stakeholders. “Our key focus as Seda is to provide support to the development of SMMEs. This can be done in various ways, including bringing the public and private sector together to ensure that market infrastructure, both physical and digital, for SMMEs is created. Today is evident of how much we can achieve as a team. All thanks go to our clients and stakeholders.” said Mr Kgole.
DSBD and its agencies continue to work diligently and tirelessly to promote entrepreneurship and develop small enterprises by providing financial and non-financial business support services that results in business growth and sustainability in collaboration with other role players.
Seda Mpumalanga is in discussion with Nkangala District Municipality and other key stakeholders to implement this kind of initiative across the district, particularly in the township and rural areas’ shopping complexes and malls.
