Own Your Destiny is a group of individuals who grew up in Acornhoek that saw a need of giving back to the community. The chairperson of the group Rhulani Mdhlovu addressed the learners and other stakeholders that were invited over weekend about their plans “we started this initiative not because we saw an opportunity to make money but an opportunity for our fellow brothers and sisters who still in matric or lower than that to have more light on how they are going to move forward with life”.
“We want learners to keep track of your school work, because these days without education you’re nothing. Everywhere you go for employment they want you to produce something in black and white,we give career guidance, we help with any university application of your choice, we doing this out of good heart because we would be happy to see you successful one day driving your own beautiful car and having a beautiful house”.
She further explained that they don’t have sponsor or funders but they took out their own money and anyone who wishes to do something their doors are always open. Amongst those who were guests present for the day was Mr Brian Nhlungwane from Acornhoek Education Forum, Dr BG Ndubane, from Teaching Ms Tirhani Godi, NYDA Nobuhle Hleza, Conversation South Africa Mrs Agnes Rapau and Acornhoek Library Leshike Nyathi. All guests mentioned were given platform to motivate and encourage all pupils to take their education serious because they are the key to success.
