President Cyril Ramaphosa makes remarks about Ehlanzeni municipality poverty rate at the presidential imbizo


President Cyril Ramaphosa made remarks during the presidential imbizo at Carolina at the Gert Sibande District municipality on Friday 20 May 2022. This was the third instalment of the Presidential imbizo this year after the other two were held in Free State and Northwest provinces. The President was accompanied by the members of his cabinet of which they engaged with communities on how to address their immediate challenges, create conditions for a long-lasting stability and they listened to their concerns over service delivery issues and development.

During Mr Presidents address he mentioned that the poverty levels are high as 72% in the Ehlanzeni District Municipality which is amongst the highest in the country. He further explained that the task before them is to use the provinces comparative advantages in terms of economic endowments to overcome poverty, inequality and unemployment.” The province has adopted the Mpumalanga Reconstruction and Recovery Plan to address the negative impact of covid-19 and on the provincial economy. It is aligned with the National Economic Reconstruction and having entered a new phase in our management of the pandemic and the lifting of the state of disaster. Our focus now is on driving sustainable and inclusive economic recovery that creates more jobs,” said Mr Ramaphosa.

The president also further expressed that Mpumalanga is an important province to the national economy adding that it is at the centre of the energy industry. On the other hand, the Mpumalanga Premier Refilwe Mtsweni-Tsipane has said that over 400 000 people in the province have lost their jobs since April 2022, and that however conceded that the provincial government has managed to create over 300 000 jobs.” The impact of covid-19 has further exacerbated the problem as well have all witnessed job losses, and we have embarked on several programs with the aim to create more job opportunities” said Premier.
