48-year old Collen Fakude from Boikhutso, Bushbuckridge was recently sentenced to 154 years imprisonment and three life sentences for various rapes and robberies. He was sentenced by the Nelspruit High Court on Wednesday, the 2nd of December 2020. According to the information provided to the court, in October 2018, Fakude found one of his victims with her boyfriend in Hlamalani and he forced them to drive to the nearest bushes where he raped the victim.
In another incident which took place in April 2018, he found one of his victims with her brother at the Gardee Junction near Injaka dam. He then forced them into the bushes, raped the victim in front of her brother and then robbed them of their belongings. In February the year, one of Fakude’s victims was driving from Bushbuckridge to Graskop when she saw a half-naked woman on the side of the road. She decided to stop and help the woman and while she was still trying to get what was going on, she was approached by Fakude. He pointed her with a firearm and forced her to the bushes where he raped her and robbed her of her belongings.
In 2017, Fakude found another one of his victims with her boyfriend waiting for a taxi in Ramalema. He pointed them with a firearm and forced them into the nearby bushes and raped the victim while the boyfriend was watching. He then robbed them. According to the police statement, in 2003, Fakude was sentenced to 27 years by the Mhala regional court for rape, robbery and possession of unlicensed firearm and he was released on parole in 2013.
The station commander of Bushbuckridge SAPS, Brigadier Riah Mkhabela said she welcomes the sentence given to the Fakude as it will serve as an example to the community not to commit crime.
